391. Afternoon Tea at the King Edward Hotel

King Edward Hotel Toronto
Last Friday afternoon, we went for a nice afternoon tea at the King Edward Hotel. The tea is served in their lobby, every Friday to Sunday from 2:30pm to 5pm. Afternoon tea is always really enjoyable and relaxing; savouring the food and tea at a nice leisurely pace, when a few hours can pass by without us even realizing it. We left completely stuffed (unfortunately unable to finish the sweets tier) and fully satisfied with the experience.

The afternoon tea at the King Edward Hotel has been a tradition since the property was built in 1903. Their tea service has evolved over time, while still maintaining its history and origins.

For $42, the King's Tea offers guests the royal treatment with an assortment of traditional finger sandwiches, sumptuous pastries and scones with Devonshire cream.
There's also a Champagne Tea (King's Tea + a glass of Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial), Sparkling or Sherry Tea (King's Tea + a glass of sparkling wine or Sherry), and Jester's Tea Party (for kids under 12)

The teas here are supplied by the brand "T", which include the signature King Edward Blend, Taj Spiced Chai Tea, Darjeeling Oolong (one of my favourite types of tea!), Lapsang Souchong, Organic Peppermint Leaves, and several others. It took us quite awhile to choose which one we wanted as they all seemed really good.

Always my favourite part of afternoon tea - the finger sandwiches! I usually rate afternoon teas by the quality of their sandwiches. I really loved the ones here. Each one was quite different from the next with a variety of flavours. My favourite was the Egg Mimosa and Asparagus Pinwheel, followed by the Lobster and Shrimp Brioche.

King Edward Hotel scones
Sun dried cherry and classic cream scones, served with Devonshire cream, strawberry preserves and house made lemon curd. The sun dried cherry scones were delicious!! Probably one of the best scones I've ever had at afternoon tea. I found the classic ones too dry though.

Roasted strawberry and rhubarb fool, Earl Grey infused chocolate pot de creme, maple sugar shack tartlet with silken maple mousse, and green tea madeleine. Since I love green tea, the madeleine was my favourite.

After the tea, we went for a bit of exploring before heading home (conveniently just a 2 minute walk away).

389. Dessert Tasting at Canoe

Toronto
Last Thursday night, I went for a dessert tasting at Canoe. A friend of mine who also frequents Canoe knows the chefs there, who got them to organize a special dessert tasting just for us. All the desserts we tried are still unavailable on their menus (except the Japanese Rice Cake). It was a great night! I met some new friends and had a 6-course dinner of all desserts at one of my favourite restaurants, with the perfect view.

My friend and I were the first ones there.

Robert Gonsalves is the pastry chef there. After he came out to introduce himself and explain a bit about the desserts, we started with the first course.

First Course: Floating Island (with poached meringue, roasted rhubarb and pistachio cream). I really loved this one, just wish it was a bigger portion.

Second Course: Baba (with lemon sabayon, poppy seed cream, fennel pollen meringue). I loved the meringue. The balls were filled with/soaked entirely in Screech Rum. They were way too strong. I was only able to eat half of one.

In between the courses I took more photos of our beautiful view..

Third Course: Apple Verrine (with poached green apple, iviore emulsion, cinnamon crumb). Everyone loved this one. It was one of my favourites as well (I love all apple desserts!). A variety of textures and temperatures combined to create a delicious dessert which tasted similar to apple crumble - only better!

Canoe Japanese rice cake

Fourth Course: Japanese Rice Cake (with Okanagan hazelnuts, green tea custard and red bean sherbet). I believe this one is currently available to order on their menu. This was another favourite of mine. The "rice cakes" are nice and chewy.

Fifth Course: Canoe Chocolate Bar (with puffed rice, banana butter and smoked marshmallow ice cream). The smoked marshmallow ice cream was my favourite part. I didn't like the rest of it too much. It's very very very chocolatey (& I'm not really into chocolate)

macarons
Sixth Course: P.F (with white chocolate & black fig mendiant) Loved these macarons!

388. Prague

Prague architecture
I just realized that all my posts for the past month and a half are food related! I have a couple more of those lined up but to prevent my blog from turning fully into a food blog, I'll get back into the travel posts for awhile. ;) Here are some photos of Prague that I haven't posted yet. I think I already told all the stories of my time there (that I want to reveal) in the previous posts, so this one will be all photos.

These next few shots were taken when I was on the Deutsche Bahn bus on my way to Munich..so please try to ignore the bug-splatted windows. I had the best seat at the very front on the top level!
