839. Munich Part 3 | Dachau

Dachau gate
I've always been interested in learning about history, WWII, and the Holocaust at school and I've always wanted to visit a concentration camp. Mainly Auschwitz, however I haven't had the chance to visit Poland yet. So when we were in Munich, we decided to visit Dachau which is quite close to the city (approximately 45 minutes away) and very easy to reach by public transportation. It was a unique experience and I'm glad to have visited. I don't think it's anything comparable to Auschwitz though as I know it is on a much larger scale with original buildings, original artifacts, posessions of the victims and many structures left intact.

In Dachau it is a "chilling" feeling standing on the site of what happened so many years ago but all the buildings and (most) artifacts are reproductions. They also don't have the barracks structures anymore. The whole site was mainly a large building with exhibits explaining the wars and Holocaust. We also weren't allowed to enter some parts of it due to COVID. Also the main entrance gate (above) is a reproduction as the real gate was stolen some years ago. They did eventually recover the real one though and it is displayed in the exhibit.
